1. Avoid contact while outside
Obviously we would want to minimise the frequency of the fabric being washed. This is a more sustainable approach in terms of your fabric durability as well as the environment. We spend less energy and materials on cleaning. In addition, the longer you keep your scarves, the less materials we need to produce and process. Therefore, we would like to strongly suggest you to keep your scarf from contacting/touching any surfaces. If you are going to take it off while sitting in a restaurant for example, we would recommend you to fold it nicely and place it in your bag or pocket. Our scarves are well adapted to this kind of routine.
2. Dry clean only
Now if you are going to clean the silk, then we strongly recommend dry cleaning as this is the most gentle way available out there.
3. Cool water and shampoo
Cleaning you silk at home is also possible. Please be very gentle and cautious about with silk fibre. You might want to start by filling a basin with cool water. Then add gentle detergent. If you are not sure about the detergent, you can try using shampoo as well. Hair shampoo is very gentle that it won’t damage the fiber, just like how it works with our hair. It works just fine destroying contaminants as well as keeping the silk smooth and soft. When draining the water from the silk, please avoid wringing it. This can cause damage to the fibre and the weaves. Instead, let the silk sit and air dry. Once it is almost dry or safe, you can use iron to dry it. This way you can avoid wrinkles as well.
4. Moisturise hands
We have done an extensive research on how silk fibre can be damaged easily by hands. Although your handling is gentle and with care, you might want to pay attention on your skin. This pandemic time forces us to use hand sanitisers and soaps more frequently. As the result, our skin is drier and peeling off. The peeled skin that still hang around in your hands can pull the fine fibres from the silk scarf. Therefore, we strongly recommend to alway moisturise your hands to prevent dry skin. This doesn’t just save you silk scarves but also your skin from being too dry and air cut.
